The experience
You arrive with your own car and meet the guide at a set point, then drive together to a private property where you leave the vehicles. The guide fits you with a helmet, headlamp and life jacket: the gear that turns you into a caver. From there, the day splits between two caves. At Arenal, you swim in a small canyon carved by water flow, the pool enclosed by limestone walls. At Charco Azul, the real adrenaline moment: you jump into the water to enter the underground chamber, where a waterfall flows inside the cave itself and limestone formations rise around you.
The guide is a certified biologist or trained interpreter who explains what you're seeing as you move through: how the caves formed, which plants and animals live in the forest above, and the petroglyphs left by Taíno people who were here centuries ago. Water and snacks are provided. The whole outing runs about four hours, which leaves the rest of your afternoon free to visit nearby beaches or grab food in the area.
What’s included
