Charco Azul hiking and swimming: caves, cliff jumps, history
Three caves, a hidden waterfall, and a cliff jump into turquoise water
Charco Azul is a guided hiking and swimming adventure in Puerto Rico's rainforest where you explore three caves, swim in turquoise water, discover ancient Taíno markings, and jump off canyon cliffs. The tour runs 3–4 hours depending on group pace and fitness level, includes snacks, photos, safety helmets and life jackets, and guides speak English and Spanish. Children are welcome from age 6.
The Experience
The hike starts with a descent to the river, where the first cliff jump marks the real beginning. From there you swim through crystal-clear water connecting the three caves, each one revealing something different—one holds a hidden waterfall, another displays ancient Taíno native carvings on the rock. The canyon cliffs are the centerpiece: you'll leap from them into the pool below, and the guide will capture the moment on video. Snacks and water are provided throughout, and you wear a safety helmet and life jacket the entire time.
The terrain shifts between hiking on solid ground and swimming through cave passages, so the tour suits moderate to challenging fitness levels depending on which sections you choose. Guides are trained nature interpreters who explain the island's flora, fauna, and the Taíno history woven through the landscape—this is not just a swim spot, but a place where the culture and the geology are inseparable. The whole experience takes around 3–4 hours, and the group size stays small enough that the guide can adjust the pace and the intensity to match who's there.
What’s included
- Snacks and water throughout the hike.
- safety helmet and life jacket for all swimming and jumping.
- professional photos and videos of your adventure.
- a live guide fluent in English and Spanish who interprets the island's flora, fauna, and Taíno cultural history.

Is this one for you?Book this if you're hiking with a small group and want both the physical thrill—cliff jumps, cave swimming, a hidden waterfall—and the cultural layer that comes from a guide who knows the Taíno history embedded in the landscape. The moderate-to-challenging terrain and the water work mean you'll need at least a moderate fitness level, but the guide scales the intensity to the group, so you're not racing anyone else's pace.
