Taste seven wines and learn what professionals actually look for
A wine tasting course in Pinhão for beginners who want to move beyond casual drinking. Held at Encosta house, you'll spend 2.5 hours learning basic wine concepts and critical tasting technique from a sommelier with 10 years of Douro experience, tasting seven Portuguese wines and finishing with a traditional pastry. The guide teaches in English, Spanish or Portuguese, and the minimum age is 15.
The Experience
The course starts with the fundamentals: how to actually look at wine, how to smell it, how to taste it in a way that tells you something. A professional sommelier walks you through the basic notions and concepts that separate informed consumption from guessing, and by the end you'll know how to analyze and taste wine critically instead of just enjoying it. Seven Portuguese wines come through during the tasting, each one a chance to practice what you've just learned on something real.
You're working in Encosta house in Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro Valley, which means the wines you're tasting are often from vineyards you can see from where you're sitting. The sommelier has spent 10 years in the region and knows the territory, and more importantly, he's there to answer the questions you've always wanted to ask someone who actually knows. Bottled water is provided, and the course wraps with rooster's crests, a traditional Portuguese pastry with egg cream and almonds.
