The experience
Serra da Lousã is a granite and schist mountain range where villages cling to steep slopes, their buildings made entirely from layered stone. Your guide drives you through the range, stopping at each village to walk its narrow lanes and viewpoints. The route passes centuries-old chestnut trees, deciduous and coniferous forests, and opens onto views across the range. Lousã Castle sits at the start of the day, its stone ruins and architectural details explained by your guide if the castle is open that morning.
The three schist villages (Talasnal, Candal and Cerdeira) each sit on a different slope and feel distinct. You'll walk through each one with your guide pointing out how the stone was quarried and stacked, how families adapted to the steep terrain, and what daily life looked like in these mountain settlements. Trevim, the highest point, offers a vantage across the entire range. On the full-day tour, you also visit Santo António da Neve and Neveiros Reais, the latter a 17th-century royal ice factory where ice was cut from mountain springs, packed in straw and sent down to the royal courts.
The van is air-conditioned and seats your group privately. Pickup happens from your hotel or a meeting point you arrange with the operator. The half-day tour fits a morning or afternoon. The full-day option lets you move at a slower pace through all seven stops and spend more time at each village. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on what you book.

What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
What are the schist villages of Serra da Lousã actually like to walk through?
Talasnal, Candal and Cerdeira are built on steep mountainsides entirely from layered schist stone. The streets are narrow and stepped, the buildings stack directly on the rock, and each village sits on a different slope with its own character. Your guide explains how the stone was quarried and how families adapted their homes to the terrain.
Can I do this tour in a morning, or does it take the whole day?
You choose between a three-hour half-day tour and a six-hour full-day tour. The half-day covers Lousã Castle, two schist villages (Talasnal and Candal), and Trevim. The full-day adds a third village (Cerdeira), Santo António da Neve, and Neveiros Reais, the former royal ice factory.
What is Neveiros Reais?
Neveiros Reais is a 17th-century royal ice factory built high in the mountains where ice was cut from cold springs, packed in straw and sent to the royal courts. It's included only on the full-day tour.

The van is air-conditioned and seats your group privately. Pickup is included from your hotel or a meeting point you arrange with the operator before the tour.
