The experience
What makes these villages worth a full day? The schist structures date back to medieval times, built into mountainsides for pastoral and agricultural work, and their stone architecture still stands largely unchanged. The tour visits multiple villages across Serra da Lousã, each one a settlement of the same dark-stone houses stacked into the slopes. You move between them by private vehicle, then walk through the streets and around the perimeter to see how they sit in the landscape.
The afternoon shifts to Penacova, where the Mondego and Alva rivers meet. Here the walk follows the water through a complex of ancient windmills and watermills, some still standing, others in ruin. The rivers cut through green mountains, and the route passes through a river pool and leisure space where the water slows. A qualified guide travels with you the entire 7 hours, pointing out the details of construction, the history of settlement, and the way the villages and mills were built to use the land and water around them.
You get photos of the tour, personal accident and liability insurance, and a regional product as part of the booking. The guide speaks English or Portuguese depending on your preference. Pickup happens from your hotel, and the day ends back there as well.

Live guide in English and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly are the schist villages, and why are they called "magic villages"?
Schist villages are medieval stone settlements built from local dark stone into mountainsides across Serra da Lousã. The name comes from their distinctive appearance: the dark schist structures, their steep placement on slopes, and the way they blend into the landscape create an architectural style that has survived centuries largely unchanged, making them visually striking and historically significant to the region.
How much walking is involved during the 7 hours?
The tour combines vehicle travel between villages with walks through the settlements themselves and along the river routes in Penacova. The itinerary is suitable for all physical fitness levels, so the walking is paced to allow everyone to explore the villages and follow the rivers to the mills without strain.
Can I eat lunch during the tour?
Lunch is not included in the tour, but restaurants are available in the villages, and you also have the option to bring a picnic and eat by the river or in one of the leisure spaces along the route.
Will the guide explain the history of the mills and rivers?
Yes. The qualified guide travels with you throughout the day and explains the windmills, watermills, and how the Mondego and Alva rivers were used to power them. The guide also describes the construction and history of the schist villages themselves.
