Step-by-step itinerary

Aveiro boat tour and beach visits

  • Pick up in Coimbra
  • Moliceiro boat ride, 45 minutes
  • Visit lighthouse and Praia da Barra beach
  • Explore Costa Nova beach and colorful houses
  • Return to Coimbra

The experience

The tour starts with pickup in Coimbra and a drive of less than an hour to Aveiro. Once there, you board one of the traditional Moliceiro boats: flat-bottomed vessels that once harvested seaweed and salt from these waters. The 45-minute journey takes you through the urban channels that divide the city, earning it the nickname "Portuguese Venice." You'll see how the waterways shape the neighborhoods and the daily rhythm of the place.

After the boat ride, the tour moves to Praia da Barra, where the Vouga river meets the Aveiro estuary. The beach is sheltered by strong walls that block the Atlantic swell, making it calm and popular with families. The Aveiro lighthouse stands here, a landmark you can see and photograph. Then you continue to Costa Nova, a beach village known for its row houses painted in bold vertical stripes: each one a different color scheme. The neighborhood runs along the Ria, and the beach itself is one of Portugal's most photographed stretches of sand.

The minivan is air-conditioned, and your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. Bottled water is provided throughout. After time in Costa Nova, the tour returns to Coimbra, completing the four-hour loop.
