Narrow streets and stone houses rebuilt from the mountains themselves.

A half-day tour from Coimbra to three schist villages in Serra da Lousã (Cerdeira, Candal and Talasnal), where shepherds' settlements built from shale stone cling to steep hillsides. The experience

The villages are built entirely from shale stone, clay and brown wood pulled from the mountains around them. Cerdeira sits at the heart of the range and doubles as a working School of Arts and Crafts. The narrow streets open onto studios where artists work in the quiet. Candal perches on a south-facing hill with a viewpoint at the top where the valley spreads below. Talasnal is the largest and most intact: a maze of steep alleys, stairs and stone balconies where the hand-built landscape and the natural one have merged so completely that walking through it feels like stepping backward in time.

The tour runs four hours total and covers all three villages by minivan, so you move between them without arranging transport yourself. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and walks the steep streets with you, pointing out the construction and the layout that made these places work for shepherds centuries ago. You'll climb and descend, the villages sit on hillsides, so a moderate level of fitness helps, though the pace is set by the group.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see how mountain villages were built and lived in, rather than just photograph them from a distance. The steep streets and hillside layout are the point (you walk them to understand how the place works), so it suits travelers who enjoy a moderate amount of climbing and want a guide who knows the history and the construction.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

What are the schist villages actually built from?

Shale stone, clay and brown wood quarried from the surrounding mountains. The houses are reconstructed using these materials so the buildings sit integrated into the landscape rather than imposed on it.

Can I walk around each village on my own, or does the guide lead the whole time?

You walk through the narrow streets and explore the villages themselves. The guide shows you where to go and explains what you're seeing, but you're not on a fixed path the whole time.

How much climbing and walking is involved?

The villages sit on steep hillsides, so you'll climb stairs and walk up and down narrow streets. The tour is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and a moderate level of physical fitness makes it comfortable.

Is lunch included in the four hours?

No, lunch is not part of this tour. The four hours cover the three villages and the minivan transport from Coimbra and back.
