The Experience

The line at the entrance can wrap around the building, especially on weekends — but with a skip-the-line ticket to Porto's World of Discoveries, you walk straight past it. Once inside, you're in a museum built around the journeys of Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, and Bartolomeu Dias, the Portuguese navigators who mapped routes across oceans when most of the world was still unknown. The centerpiece is a replica 16th-century ship you actually board — a full-scale indoor boat ride that takes you through recreated landscapes: equatorial forests, the Indian Ocean, the coasts of India, Timor, China, Japan, Brazil. As you move through the ship, fog screens and projections shift around you, and the audioguide (available in multiple languages) explains what each explorer faced, how they navigated without instruments we'd recognize, and what they found.
