Porto: Tile Painting Workshop & Cocktails Downtown
Paint a Portuguese Tile in Porto, Then Drink It In
You spend two hours painting a ceramic tile while learning how Portuguese tiles shaped the city's identity, sipping cocktails as you work. All materials and your finished tile are included, and you take it home the same day. It's a workshop that doesn't require any art background and leaves you with something you actually made, not something you bought.
Step-by-step itinerary
Tile painting workshop with cocktails
- Arrive at Boiler Studio
- Learn history of Portuguese tiles
- Paint your own tile
- Enjoy cocktails during workshop
- Take painted tile home
The Experience
You walk into Boiler Studio expecting a craft class and instead find yourself holding a paintbrush in one hand and a Port & Tonic in the other. The workshop runs two hours, and the first thing your instructor does is skip the "you need talent" speech — because you don't. Instead, she talks about why tiles matter in Porto, which colors show up on the city's actual buildings, and the people and influences that made Portuguese azulejos what they are. It's the kind of context that makes the blank tile in front of you feel less like a blank tile and more like a small piece of something.
The painting itself uses a technique the studio developed so you can actually take the tile home the same day — not weeks later, not after firing, not with a promise it'll be ready next month. You work at your own pace, and the cocktails keep coming. Port & Tonic is the obvious choice (it's what Porto is famous for), but there are other options if that's not your thing. The materials are all there: paints, brushes, whatever you need. Nobody's watching to see if you're "doing it right." The point is the tile you made, the hour you spent not thinking about logistics, and the fact that you'll actually see it on a shelf at home and remember the afternoon.
The studio sits downtown near the Cathedral, so if you finish early or want to walk around afterward, you're already in the neighborhood. Groups stay small, and if you're bringing a larger party, you can contact them 24 hours ahead to check availability. It's the kind of thing that works whether you're traveling solo, with a partner, or with friends — everyone leaves with their own tile and the same story to tell.
