The experience
You arrive with a free afternoon or a few hours between other plans, and the workshop begins with a short introduction to Portuguese azulejos. The hand-painted tiles that have shaped Porto and Lisbon's streets and buildings for centuries. Your instructor, trained in tile painting, walks you through the history and then hands you a blank white ceramic tile and a set of brushes. You choose from an exclusive selection of traditional patterns the team has documented directly from Porto's architecture, or sketch your own design instead.
The painting itself takes up most of the two hours. Your instructor guides the technical side (how to hold the brush, how the glazes behave, where to layer color), but the tile is yours to make. While you work, Port wine, coffee, juice, and a spread of sweet and savory snacks sit on the table. People paint, talk, refill their glasses, and watch their designs take shape. The workshop is built for this: no experience needed, no pressure to be good, just the materials and the time to make something by hand.
When the session ends, you leave with your painted tile in a box, ready to travel home or to your hotel. The tile needs to be picked up within four months for glazing and firing, which the workshop arranges. It becomes a souvenir that is actually yours. Something you made, not something you bought.

Is this one for you?Two hours is short enough to fit into a free afternoon or a break between other plans, but long enough to move past nerves and actually finish a tile you'll want to keep. If you have only an hour or need to stay longer, this exact length won't work for you.
