The experience

The drive from Funchal to Ribeira Brava takes about 45 minutes without stops. Ribeira Brava sits on the southwestern coast and has been built around agriculture: sweet potatoes, beans, vegetables and wine still come from the land there. From there the road climbs toward the northwest, and the landscape shifts: the valleys deepen, waterfalls begin to appear on the cliffs, and the black sand beach at Seixal comes into view with water flowing down the mountainside behind it. Your guide will narrate how people in these villages have lived and still live, connecting the old ways to what you see now.

Agua D'alto waterfall is the first real stop, a place to step out and look at the water and the rock formations around it, with views across toward São Vicente and Ponta Delgada. The road from São Vicente to Seixal is lined with waterfalls, not a single cascade but a series of them, each one visible as you drive. Seixal itself is the village with the black sand beach, an unusual feature on this coast, and from the mountains you can see more waterfalls dropping toward the shore. The landscape is dense with detail: rock formations, valleys, the sea close enough to feel the shift in air.

Porto Moniz is where you swim. The natural pools are formed in volcanic rock, shaped by the sea over time, and they're the main reason people come to this part of the island. You'll have time in the water and also a spare hour to walk around the village and eat if you want: lunch is optional and paid separately. The rock pools themselves charge a small entry fee per person if you choose to use them.
