The Experience
Eleven to twelve hours covers the drive from Porto, the walks and the stops across Peneda-Gerês, Portugal's only national park. You travel in a Tesla Model 3 Highland electric car with an air-conditioned cabin, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. The route moves through the park's wild landscapes and traditional villages, stopping first at Ponte da Misarela (a stone bridge built according to legend by the Devil) for a quiet walk of about thirty minutes. From there, the day opens onto Fecha das Barjas, known locally as Tahiti Waterfall, one of the park's most photographed cascades.
The Pedra Bela viewpoint sits at the heart of the park, an amphitheatre of rock overlooking the Caldo River bridges and the Caniçada reservoir. A twenty-minute walk brings you to Portela do Homem waterfall, one of the most beautiful in Portugal and Spain. Between the water and the views, you pass the granaries of Soajo: twenty-four stone structures on a granite outcrop, some still used for threshing, the oldest dated 1782. Lunch happens at a regional restaurant where you taste authentic local flavours. Depending on the season, that may include Ermelo oranges, a Slow Food product. The tour ends in Ponte de Lima, where you cross the Roman bridge and walk the historic area for about an hour before the return to Porto.
At Lindoso, near the castle, stands another set of granaries (fifty of them from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries), and you spend about thirty minutes there before heading back. The electric vehicle and the small group size mean the day moves at a pace that lets you linger at each stop without rushing through the park.
