The experience
The tour leaves Porto in the morning and heads north to Viana do Castelo, a town where the Atlantic and the Lima river meet. The first stop is the Santa Luzia sanctuary, perched on a mountainside. National Geographic named the view (across the river, sea, mountains and countryside) one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. You walk through the old town, visit monuments and stop at a traditional pastry shop known across the region.
Ponte de Lima is the heart of the day. This village sits on the Lima River and holds the title of Portugal's oldest settlement, with a history that shaped the country itself. You'll have time to wander the squares and riverbank before lunch at a traditional restaurant, where the meal comes with green wine: the region's signature light, slightly fizzy white. After eating, you visit the Interpretation Center of the Green Wine for a second tasting led by a wine expert, learning how the vinho verde is made and why it matters to this corner of northern Portugal.
The group stays small, no more than eight people, and travels in a new air-conditioned van. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. Pickup and return to your Porto hotel are included, as are refreshing tissues, an umbrella if needed, and a traditional regional sweet. The whole day runs nine hours.
