The experience
Braga earned the nickname "Portuguese Rome" for its density of religious buildings, and this tour focuses on the four that anchor its history. The Cathedral (ordered built in the 11th century by Teresa de Leão, Portugal's first king mother) anchors the first stop. You'll walk the main church, the Piedade chapel and the external areas with a guide. From there the route climbs to Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019 that combines a monumental stairway with a basilica perched about 6 kilometers from the city center. The elevation gives a full 360-degree view of Braga and the surrounding landscape. The third point of the triangle sits even higher, at Sameiro sanctuary, founded in the 18th century and positioned at the hilltop's peak.
The fourth stop, Monastery of Tibães, is a 17th-century architectural complex that includes the church, a cross, the former monastery (now a museum) and extensive gardens. Between the major sites, the route passes through Braga's historic center, where you'll see some of the city's other notable religious buildings without stopping at each one. The full day runs nine hours and includes a local Portuguese guide or driver, all entry fees, and transportation between sites. Pickup is available from Porto if you choose that option at checkout. Alternatively, you can depart directly from Braga.
