Before you leave, you tell your guide what draws you (off-road driving, misty forest walks along the Levadas, black sand beaches, mountain peaks, or villages most visitors skip), and the route builds itself around that. The 4x4 handles terrain a regular car cannot reach, so you get access to viewpoints and trailheads that sit outside the standard loop. Your guide is someone who lives on the island and knows which paths are worth the detour and which views change depending on the light.

Pickup happens from Funchal, Câmara de Lobos or Caniço Bay, so you don't arrange separate transport.
