The experience

Praça do Comércio opens the route: the waterfront plaza where you meet your guide and get fitted for a helmet before rolling onto the Segway. The tour moves through Alfama's narrow, winding streets, where the old town's layout hasn't changed in centuries, then climbs to Senhora do Monte Viewpoint, the highest point in the city. From there you ride past the National Pantheon, where some of Portugal's celebrated figures are buried, and circle the São Vicente de Fora Monastery, where royal families were laid to rest.

The route includes the flea market, the tracks of Lisbon's famous 28th tram, and a stop at the Santa Justa Lift: an iron elevator built over 100 years ago that stands just next to Rossio Square. You'll roll down Avenida da Liberdade, the grand avenue lined with splendid buildings, and pass through Chiado, where street performers work and conventual sweet shops line the streets. The tour also takes in the São Vicente monastery's colorful views over the Tagus River and São Jorge Castle.

A guide leads the whole group, narrating the history and culture of each stop. The 3-hour pace keeps you moving without rushing, and the Segway does the work on uphills. You're steering and balancing, not pedaling or walking. Minimum age is 12. Maximum is 68, and riders need to weigh between 35 and 118 kilograms.
