The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — that soft electric whirr as our Segways rolled out from Praça do Comércio. The square was so wide open it almost felt like a movie set, but real life: pigeons flapping up as we wobbled past (I was definitely wobbly at first). Our guide, Miguel, grinned and told us not to worry — “Lisbon is easier to ride than it looks!” He pointed out the old arcades where traders used to shout deals at sunrise. Honestly, I could still smell the river air mixed with roasted chestnuts from a nearby cart.

We zipped into Alfama next — those narrow streets are like a maze someone made just for fun (or to confuse invaders, which apparently was half true). I kept thinking we’d get stuck but somehow Miguel always found a way through. He waved at an old lady leaning out her window; she yelled something back that sounded friendly enough. The stones under us were bumpy — calçada portuguesa, he called it — and every so often you’d catch a bit of music drifting down from somewhere above. I nearly missed seeing the National Pantheon because I was distracted by all the colors on people’s laundry lines.

Going uphill was weirdly fun — Segways just glide up like it’s nothing. We stopped at Senhora do Monte Viewpoint and honestly? That view over Lisbon with the Tagus River shining in the distance… I still think about that moment. It was windy up there; my hair did its own thing and I didn’t even care. On the way back we passed the Santa Justa Lift — this iron tower sticking up between tiled buildings — and Miguel told us about how it’s over 100 years old, built by someone who studied under Eiffel. Not sure if he was joking or not, but it sounded cool.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip in Lisbon. At Chiado we tried these little pastries from a convent sweet shop (I can’t pronounce what they’re called), and Miguel teased me for getting powdered sugar everywhere. There were street performers near Rossio Square too — one guy balancing on an actual ladder while singing fado. The whole thing felt less like a tour and more like being shown around by someone who really loves their city. If you’re even slightly nervous about riding a Segway for the first time… don’t be. It’s easy after five minutes, especially with someone local leading the way.

What’s included

Your day includes use of a Segway or e-bike (your choice), helmet for safety, guidance from a knowledgeable local throughout every stop—from Praça do Comércio to Alfama’s alleys—and plenty of spontaneous stories along the way before returning to your starting point downtown.
