You start at Commerce Square, one of Europe's largest, then move through Rossio (the historic center where national events have unfolded), and ride up Avenida da Liberdade, the avenue lined with expensive shops that climbs toward Edward VII Park. The guide narrates as you go, pointing out the architecture, the history layered into each square, the neighborhoods worth knowing.

The route bends to what you want to see. Food, architecture, history, shopping: name the theme and the stops adjust. You'll pass through Chiado, the neighborhood packed with theaters, restaurants and smaller streets most visitors miss, then reach the viewpoints: Senhora do Monte and Edward VII Park both give you the city spread below. The Santa Justa Lift, one of Lisbon's three funiculars, is part of the ride: Eiffel-era engineering you see up close.
