The Experience
The first thing I noticed inside From The Vine was this soft, nutty smell — like warm bread and something earthy I couldn’t quite name. Our guide, Joana, waved us over to a table already set with six glasses (which felt ambitious for lunch, honestly). She started us off in the north of Portugal, pouring something crisp while telling a story about her grandfather’s vineyard. I didn’t expect to laugh so much at wine facts, but she made it feel like we were just friends swapping stories.
The wines came out one by one — reds, whites, even a cheeky rosé. Each glass had its own little plate: creamy cheese from the Azores, smoky sausage from Alentejo. At one point Joana asked if anyone could taste “the Atlantic” in the vinho verde. I tried to sound smart but just said it tasted like summer rain. She grinned and said that was close enough. There was this moment when the room went quiet except for the clink of glasses and someone’s low chuckle — it felt good to just sit there and taste without rushing anywhere.
I kept thinking how different each region’s wine felt — some sharp, some almost sweet, all paired with these salty cheeses and peppery meats that made everything pop. Joana answered every weird question we threw at her (even when I asked if people actually drink port at breakfast — apparently not). By the end I’d lost track of which region we were on but remembered how the last red lingered on my tongue longer than I expected. Still think about that final sip sometimes when I walk past a wine bar back home.
