The Experience

“You know, the river always tells you something new,” our captain grinned as we stepped on board near Cais do Sodré. I didn’t really get what he meant until we were out there, gliding past the 25th of April Bridge. The wind was softer than I expected, carrying this faint salty smell mixed with something sweet — maybe from the bakeries along the shore? Anyway, everyone loosened up after the first glass of vinho verde (I spilled a bit on my shoe, classic me). The city looked different from the water. Softer somehow.

We drifted by Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries just as the sun started to dip. Our guide pointed out details on Jerónimos Monastery that I’d missed walking past it earlier — little carvings and stone ropes. He even tried to teach us how to say “Padrão dos Descobrimentos” properly; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Portuguese — probably butchered it. There was this moment when everyone went quiet watching light flicker off Commerce Square’s yellow walls. Not sure why but it felt important to notice.

The boat wasn’t crowded (max 14 people), so you could actually hear each other talk or just sit back under a blanket if you wanted. Someone asked about Alfama and our guide told a story about fado singers growing up there — his uncle used to play guitar in those bars apparently. I liked that he didn’t rush through facts; sometimes he’d just point and let us look for ourselves. The vinho verde was cold, not fancy but perfect for that golden hour feeling. I still think about that view under the bridge, honestly.
