The experience
The boat leaves from Lisbon's waterfront and heads toward Praça do Comércio, the city's grandest plaza, where you can see the old neighborhoods stacked on the hills: Chiado, Baixa, Castelo and Alfama. From there the route crosses the river to Cacilhas, a small city on the opposite bank where the view opens up to show almost the whole of Lisbon at once. The crew (friendly and experienced) keeps the boat steady while you stand on deck or sit and take in the scale of it.
As you sail, the boat passes close to Cristo Rei, the statue of Christ with arms raised that stands above the southern bank, then goes under the 25th of April Bridge before reaching Belém Tower, the fortress built in the sixteenth century to guard the harbor entrance. On the return, you'll notice how the riverbanks are usually full of people: locals walking, sitting and talking by the water, watching boats pass. The light changes as the afternoon moves toward evening, and the colors spread across the hills the way the description promises.
Bottled water, white and rosé wine, and a plate of cheese and charcuterie come with the tour. You can choose between an all-day option or an afternoon sail, depending on when you want to be on the water. The tour runs in English or Portuguese, and the boat suits all fitness levels.
