The experience
The boat leaves from the Tagus waterfront in Old Town and heads west along the river, giving you a different angle on Lisbon's most recognizable sights. You'll sail past Belém Tower, the 16th-century fortress that stands at the river's mouth, and see Jerónimos Monastery, the UNESCO-listed complex that King Manuel I commissioned to celebrate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The 25th of April Bridge spans overhead: a suspension bridge built in 1966 and renamed in 1974 to mark the Carnation Revolution. Across the water in Almada, Cristo Rei rises 110 metres above the opposite bank, a Catholic monument inspired by Rio's Christ the Redeemer.
Wine flows throughout the cruise: one bottle is shared among every three passengers, so you're sipping rather than rushing through a glass. Snacks arrive with it. The route also passes the Electricity Factory, a converted power station now housing MAAT, a museum focused on art, architecture and technology, and you'll see the Ajuda National Palace, the 19th-century royal residence where important state ceremonies still take place. The whole arc takes two hours, which is long enough to settle into the rhythm of the river without eating up your whole day in the city.
A live guide in English or Portuguese narrates the route, so you get context for what you're seeing rather than just drifting past. Children must be with an adult, and the boat accommodates all fitness levels. There's no hiking or climbing involved, just boarding and sitting. Service animals are welcome.
