The experience
The tour starts at Algar Seco, a rock formation carved by centuries of Atlantic waves into pools, arches and jumping points from the sandstone cliffs. Nearby, a short tunnel called "A Boneca", the Doll, opens into a sea cave with two window-like openings framing the ocean. From there, a ten-minute boardwalk along the Carvoeiro clifftops leads to Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, a 17th-century fort built on the site of an older watchtower, where a chapel and defensive walls overlook the beach and town below.
After the fort, the route descends to a viewpoint over Carvoeiro's beach and traditional Algarve architecture, then gives you about 30 minutes to walk the old town freely: time to explore the beach, shop for souvenirs or simply wander. Lunch follows at a nearby Portuguese restaurant (not included in the tour price). The afternoon moves to Lagos, where you'll see the statue of the city's protector and the Ponta da Piedade headland: a dramatic stretch of sandstone pillars, rock arches and hidden grottos shaped by winter storms into one of the Algarve's finest natural coastlines.
Lagos itself carries 2,000 years of history. Celtic settlers named it Lacobriga; Romans brought prosperity; Moors built the walls in the 10th century. The 15th century made it a golden age: the port sat directly across from Africa and became the major departure point for ships of the Age of Discovery. Henry the Navigator founded his school at nearby Sagres, gathering cartographers, navigators and geographers to pool knowledge from each expedition and teach the use of instruments like the sea compass and astrolabe. The tour ends at a 15th-century church with a single nave, painted high altar and luminous biblical scenes.
