The experience
The day starts in the fishing villages of Burgau and Salema, where traditional architecture and beaches set the tone before you move into Lagos proper. You'll stop at the Municipal Market and a viewpoint overlooking the Marina and Meia Praia, then have one and a half to two hours free for lunch and your own pace through the town. The guide will point you toward local restaurants suited to different tastes and budgets.
After lunch, a guided walk takes you through the center of Lagos on foot, passing the Slave Market (the first of its kind in Europe), and the 18th-century Santo António Church. You'll see the Arch of Saint Gonçalo, the gateway to the old town, and the statue of the same saint, which offers a natural spot for photos. Brief stops follow at Praia do Pinhão and Ponta da Piedade, where the cliffs frame hidden beaches and a lighthouse comes into view.
The route then heads west to Sagres, stopping at Praia da Mareta, the port and surrounding village. Entry to the Cape Saint Vincent fortress is included. It marks the most southwestern point in Europe and houses the continent's most powerful lighthouse, with a light range of 59 kilometers. A café at the fortress stays open until sunset if you want a snack. The Sagres Fortress itself, a 15th-century military fortification, is nearby but entry is optional and separate.
