The experience
The day starts inside Silves Castle, where you walk the fortifications and take in the views across the town. From there you move to the cathedral in Silves itself, then head into the Monchique hills. The trails wind through local trees and vegetation. You'll drink from the natural spring fountain that feeds the area. Mount Fóia, the tallest point in the Algarve, comes next. You walk around the summit and see the landscape spread below.
The final stop is a small wine farm that spreads across a valley. Local guides spend about twenty minutes explaining the farm's history and walking you through the caves and winemaking process. Then you settle into a relaxed tasting of three different wines, paired with tapas of cheese and cold meats. The vehicle stays air-conditioned throughout, and entry fees to the castle, church and monument are already covered. A typical lunch break of around an hour at a Portuguese restaurant falls outside the tour cost, so you can choose where and what to eat.
