Cape Saint Vincent & Silves: Full-Day Historical Algarve Tour
Four centuries of Portuguese history in one day: the southwestern cliffs, a Moorish castle, and the inland countryside.
This full-day guided tour departs from Albufeira and covers the historical landmarks of western Algarve—Cape Saint Vincent at the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, the old city of Lagos, the Monchique region, and Silves with its castle and cathedral. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide in English, Portuguese or French, and the route includes back roads where larger tour buses cannot go, offering views over the Algarve's interior. Pickup from your Albufeira accommodation is included; lunch is your own choice in Lagos.

The Experience
The day starts with pickup from the Albufeira area and heads straight to Cape Saint Vincent, the southwestern tip of mainland Europe and the point Portuguese navigators knew as the End of the World before the age of discovery. The cliffs here drop to the Atlantic, and you have time to take in the scale of it—the views stretch across open water with no land beyond. From there the route moves east to Lagos, a walled historical city where you can spend the midday hours as you choose: grab lunch at a local spot, visit one of the museums, or walk the old town and its narrow streets lined with period buildings and handicrafts.
The afternoon turns inland toward Monchique on roads too narrow for the big tour buses, which is the whole point. These smaller routes open up views across the Algarve's countryside and give you a sense of how the interior lives—a different landscape entirely from the coast. The drive includes several photo stops so you can step out and capture the terrain. Then comes Silves, the old Moorish capital of the region, where the castle and the cathedral are the main draw; both are well preserved, and the guide walks you through what each one represents in the region's layered history. From Silves, the route turns back toward Albufeira and your hotel.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see both the dramatic Atlantic cliffs and the interior countryside in one day—the smaller roads through Monchique are the difference, since standard tour buses can't navigate them, so you get access to views and villages the bigger groups miss.

What is Cape Saint Vincent and why is it called the End of the World?
Cape Saint Vincent is the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, where the cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean. Portuguese navigators called it the End of the World before the age of discovery because it marked the edge of the known world at that time. You'll have free time there to walk the cliffs and take in the views across the open ocean.
Can I choose what to do during the stop in Lagos?
Yes. Lagos is a historical city with museums, shops, handicrafts and a preserved old town. You can spend the midday hours exploring the narrow streets, visiting a museum, or having lunch at a local restaurant—the choice is yours.
Why does this tour use smaller roads through Monchique instead of the main highways?
The smaller back roads through Monchique are too narrow for the large tour buses, but that's what makes them worth taking. They open up views across the Algarve's countryside and interior culture that the main routes don't reach. The tour includes several photo stops along the way.
What can I see at Silves?
Silves was the old Moorish capital of the Algarve region. The main sights are the castle and the cathedral, both well preserved. Your guide will explain the history of each and what they represent in the region's past.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. You have free time in Lagos to choose your own meal at a local restaurant, or you can bring your own food if you prefer.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English, Portuguese, and French. You can request your preferred language when you book.
