Ria Formosa boat trip with island walks, fishing village stories and sea air

You’ll ride with a local skipper from Faro through the winding channels of Ria Formosa, stopping to walk windswept Deserta Island and visit Culatra’s fishing village. Expect sea breezes, small group company, wildlife sightings, and plenty of time to wander or swim — plus stories you won’t find in any guidebook.

6h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Explore Villa do Farol de Sta. Maria
  • Visit Villa da Culatra fishing community
  • Observe local fauna and flora
  • Learn about Ria Formosa traditions
  • Hike and swim on beaches

The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so quickly out of the city — one minute we were dodging scooters near Faro marina, next thing there’s just water everywhere and Nuno (our skipper) grinning at the helm. He grew up here, you can tell by the way he jokes with the fishermen passing by. The Ria Formosa islands look almost unreal in early light, all shifting blues and silvers. I kept thinking I’d spot flamingos but mostly it was herons and these tiny crabs scuttling over the sandbanks.

The first stop was Deserta Island — southernmost tip of Portugal, apparently, though it just felt like being dropped onto another planet. The wind had that salty tang that sticks to your lips. We walked along the boardwalks for a bit; I tried to pronounce “Ilha Deserta” properly and Li laughed at my accent (I deserved it). Nuno pointed out edible plants growing wild in the dunes — samphire? Tasted sharp and green. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for distant gulls and our feet crunching on shells.

Later we pulled up at Culatra village. It’s a real working fishing community — not touristy at all, which honestly surprised me. Kids ran barefoot between whitewashed houses, and an old man nodded as we passed (Nuno greeted him by name). We got coffee from a tiny café that smelled like fried dough and seaweed. Lunch wasn’t included but we grabbed some grilled fish anyway — best decision ever. On the way back across the lagoon, sunburned and a little sleepy, I watched the light flicker off the water and thought: this is what people mean when they say slow travel. I still think about that view sometimes.

What’s included

Your day includes a 6-hour guided boat trip with Nuno (your local skipper), stops for walking or swimming at Deserta Island and Culatra village, use of well-kept lifeguard vests for everyone onboard, plus time to buy coffee or snacks in Culatra before heading back toward Faro marina together.
