The experience

The boat leaves Faro Marina with your skipper Nuno Pudim, a professional with three years guiding experience and a lifetime on these waters: his family were fishermen and mariscers here. Over six hours, you move through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a sheltered system of islands and temperate water that he calls his playground. The route takes you to Deserta Island, the southernmost point of Continental Portugal, then across to Culatra Island to see the Villa do Farol de Sta. Maria, a lighthouse village built into the island itself.

Along the way you stop to swim on the beaches and hike the islands, moving at a pace that lets the day breathe instead of rushing through a checklist. The skipper points out the fauna and flora of the Ria (what lives here, what grows here), and explains the traditions of the fishing communities you pass through. You also visit Villa da Culatra, a working Portuguese fishing village where the customs and rhythms of the water still shape daily life. Lifeguard vests are provided and kept functional throughout.

Groups stay small, which is how the experience stays personalized instead of becoming a ferry run. The skipper speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and one additional language, so the narration reaches whoever is on the boat that day.
