The experience

If you have a free afternoon in Faro or are visiting the Algarve for the first time, this boat cruise solves the problem of seeing the Ria Formosa without renting a car or navigating the channels yourself. You board at Faro Marina and travel through the natural park's waterways with a guide who points out the spoonbills, egrets, great cormorants, grey herons, kentish plovers, oystercatchers, whimbrels and storks that live in the salt marshes and dunes. The boat stays small, never more than 11 people, so you're not packed in with a crowd.

The route takes you to Farol island first, where you get free time to walk the dunes, explore the small sand-built houses and rustic streets, or swim in the shallow water at the southernmost point of Portugal. On the morning tour during high season, you can eat lunch at one of the island's typical restaurants (your choice, not arranged by the tour company) or bring a picnic and stay longer. The afternoon stop is shorter, around an hour. From there the boat continues to Deserta island for more time to explore the beach and wildlife before heading back to Faro.

The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, so the commentary works whether you're traveling alone or with a group that speaks different languages. Parking is available at Faro Marina if you're driving. Public transport options are also nearby. Bring sun protection and a swimsuit if you plan to use the water.
