The experience
The Ria Formosa is a protected lagoon system of shallow channels, salt marshes and barrier islands, and a kayak lets you move through it at your own pace without the noise and wake of a motorboat. Your guide meets you, gives a short briefing on technique and safety, then you board a kayak fitted with a comfortable seat and pedal out into the water. The paddle itself is easy-level, no experience needed, and the guide steers you toward whichever of the three islands suits the day: Armona, Farol or Fuseta. Along the way, they point out the birds, fish and plant life that make the lagoon distinct, and explain how it works as an ecosystem.
Once you reach the island, the guide shows you the points of interest based on what you want to see. That might be a working fishermen's village where boats still land with the catch, a lighthouse standing on the dunes, a stretch of natural park beach, or a combination of all three. The islands themselves are quiet (no cars, no crowds), and the guide knows the paths and the people who live there. You're not watching from a boat. You're walking on the sand and seeing the place on foot, which changes how it feels.
The whole outing runs four hours from start to finish. You'll have a mobile phone drybag to keep your things dry, a lifejacket, a paddle, and a 30-liter drybag for any gear you bring. Public transport is available near the meeting point if you're not driving, and the operator can arrange a specialized infant seat if you're bringing a child under three.

The Ria Formosa is home to wading birds, fish species and salt-marsh plants. The guide points out what's visible on the day you paddle and explains how the lagoon ecosystem works.
How long is the paddle, and will my arms get tired?
The outing is four hours total, including the briefing, the paddle to the island and time exploring on foot. You pedal the kayak rather than paddle with your arms, so the effort is spread across your legs and core, and the easy pace means you set the speed.
