Cook alongside locals, then sit down to a slow-roasted Alcatra that took six hours to prepare.

This activity takes you into a local home on Terceira for a three-hour dinner where you help prepare an Azorean meal, drink Portuguese wines and homemade liquors, and hear stories about island culture and traditions from your hosts. Groups stay small, up to eight people, so the evening centers on real conversation, not a crowd. The menu shifts with the season and what the kitchen decides: typically a slow-cooked pot roast or fish casserole, local cheeses and sausages to start, and a traditional sweet like D. Amélia cake or Conde da Praia pudding to finish.

The experience

The meal begins the moment you walk through the door. Your hosts welcome you into their home, and when the weather allows, you move outside to the garden. While they prepare dinner, you're not watching from a distance. You're in the kitchen helping, tasting, asking questions. Drinks and appetizers come first: bread, cheese, olives and local sausages, paired with Portuguese wine. The conversation moves between the food itself and the island's history, traditions and the way Terceira cooks. Sometimes hosts trade recipes. Sometimes they explain why a particular dish matters to the place.

The centerpiece is usually Alcatra, the island's signature pot roast, made with three different cuts of beef and slow-cooked for about six hours. You might also get a cod fish casserole, depending on what the kitchen has chosen. The pace is unhurried. This is dinner, not a tasting menu with courses timed to the minute. Dessert brings one of the island's traditional sweets, coffee, a dessert wine, and homemade liquors that the family has made. The whole evening runs three hours, but there's no clock watching. The meal ends when the meal ends.

The group caps at eight people by design. This is a small family business, not a commercial kitchen, so the hosts can actually talk to you, adjust the meal if someone has a food intolerance (notify in advance), and make the evening feel like dinner with people you know rather than a staged event. Larger organized groups and families can arrange something different. Private events are possible too. The price shifts with group size (more people means a lower per-person cost), so check what the booking shows for your party.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to cook and eat with locals rather than watch a demonstration or sit in a restaurant. The small group size, up to eight, means real conversation with your hosts instead of a crowd, and the three-hour pace lets the meal unfold without rushing. This is not a cooking class where you learn techniques to take home. It's an evening inside a family kitchen where you help, taste and listen.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 18 years); Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What is Alcatra and why is it the main dish?

Alcatra is Terceira's signature pot roast, made with three different kinds of beef and cooked low and slow for about six hours. It's the number one typical local dish on the island, and the hosts prepare it as the centerpiece of the meal.

What happens if I have a food intolerance or allergy?

The hosts can work with some food intolerances if you notify them in advance. Vegetarian and vegan options are not offered, as this is a small family business with a set menu, but they will do their best to accommodate specific dietary needs when possible.

Does the menu change, or is it the same every time?

The menu varies. Starters, mains, wines and desserts shift depending on what's in season and what the kitchen decides. Sometimes it's the typical Alcatra and fish casserole. Other times, when weather permits, the hosts prepare a meat or fish barbecue instead.

Is this a private dinner or will I be eating with other groups?

Groups stay small by design, up to eight people, so you'll be dining together as one party in the home. The hosts can arrange private events for larger organized groups and families if needed.
