The experience

Ten hours in a 4X4 vehicle means reaching places the standard tourism routes don't touch. The tour visits Porta do Lindoso, Porta do Mezio and Porta de Lamas de Mouro (three of the five gates into the park), and stops in villages where the architecture and way of life have barely shifted in centuries. Lindoso sits on a mountainside with a medieval castle, stone granaries and narrow streets of farmhouses built in the region's typical style. Soajo spreads across a granite slab overlooking the Lima River, known for its cluster of granaries classified as Property of Public Interest. The Adião River runs below with transparent pools and waterfalls where you can bathe if conditions permit.

The route passes the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda, tucked into a ravine against a rock face with a waterfall behind it, and stops at the Vale da Peneda viewpoint for one of the park's widest views. Castro Laboreiro sits at 1,000 meters on the plateau: a village of shepherds and farmers in wolf country, with the ruins of a castle standing above it. From the granite ridges throughout the day, the landscapes open in all directions: you see the fauna and flora the park holds, the water courses cutting down the slopes, and the scale of the terrain itself.

Lunch arrives with traditional regional products, timed to refuel you midway. Hotel pickup from Viana do Castelo is included, and the 4X4 vehicle handles the steep terrain and rough tracks that ordinary cars cannot reach.

Is this one for you?The 4X4 vehicle is what unlocks access to the remote villages and high plateaus: ordinary cars cannot reach Castro Laboreiro or the rougher tracks to the lagoons and waterfalls. Book this if you want to move beyond the marked trails and see the park's interior, not just its edges.
