The Experience

I still laugh thinking about the first thing our driver said when he picked us up in Zakopane—something like “don’t eat too much breakfast, you’ll want room for cheese.” He was right. Midway through our day trip from Zakopane, Piotr led us to a spot where smoke curled up from a bonfire already crackling away. Lunch was simple—sausages roasted on sticks, bread that tasted faintly of caraway, hot tea in tin mugs—but somehow it felt like the best meal ever after all that cold air and adrenaline. Everyone traded stories around the fire; even the quietest person started talking once their hands thawed out. I didn’t expect to feel so at home with strangers on a private snowmobile tour in Poland.

By the time we got back to town (transfers included, thank god—I was wiped), my hair smelled like pine smoke and my fingers were still tingling.
