The Experience

Ever wondered if sheep’s cheese really tastes smoky, or if mountain air feels different outside Krakow? That’s kind of how our day started — half curious, half just wanting to get out of the city for a bit. The van picked us up right on time (which honestly surprised me), and then it was two hours of countryside rolling past the windows. I kept catching glimpses of little wooden houses and patches of snow that looked like someone spilled flour over the hills. Our guide, Piotr, cracked jokes about his grandma’s lard recipe — he said we’d try something “properly Polish” later. I believed him.

When we got to Dzianisz, there was this sharp smell in the air — woodsmoke and something sweet? Maybe pine. We pulled on helmets and gloves (they had everything ready) and chose quads since the snow was patchy that day. I didn’t expect the engine to rumble so much under me; it made my teeth chatter at first. But after a few minutes following Piotr up muddy trails, I stopped thinking about it and just watched the Tatra peaks flash between trees. There was this one turn where everyone slowed down just to stare for a second — no one said anything, but you could hear boots crunching when we stopped.

The bonfire after felt like some kind of reward. Someone handed me a slice of oscypek still warm from the grill, with cranberry jam that tasted way better than I thought it would (I’m not usually into jams). People passed around little glasses of liqueur — cherry? Plum? Piotr tried teaching us how to say “na zdrowie” but I think mine came out all wrong; he laughed anyway. The bread was thick and chewy, not like what you get in supermarkets back home.

I lost track of time at Chochołowskie Thermal Baths. The water steamed up around us while outside you could see snow stuck on rooftops and those blue-grey mountains in the distance. It was quiet except for some kids splashing farther off; mostly just people soaking or leaning back with their eyes closed. Three hours went fast — maybe too fast — and by the time we got back in the van for Krakow I felt like I’d left something behind out there. Still think about that view from the pool sometimes, especially when city noise gets too much.
