The experience
Stutthof was the first concentration camp built in occupied Poland. Over its 5 years of operation, it held prisoners from 28 countries. More than 110,000 were tortured, forced to work or died in the gas chambers. Your private guide meets you at your hotel or cruise port in Gdansk, Sopot or Gdynia and drives you roughly an hour to the camp. The guide answers your questions as you walk the grounds and enter the moving exhibitions, then you watch a documentary in the Stutthof Museum Cinema. You're guaranteed 2 hours of guided time at the camp itself, regardless of traffic delays on the drive.
The tour comes in two lengths. The 5-hour version focuses on Stutthof alone. If you book the 7-hour option, you choose one additional stop: Westerplatte, a military base that became the symbol of Poland's resistance and now holds a small military cemetery and a monument to the defenders of the Polish Coast; the Museum of the Second World War, considered one of Poland's best museums, where the guide provides context on the conflict from multiple viewpoints; or a walking tour of Gdansk's Old Town, taking in St. Mary's Church (the world's largest brick church), the Artus Court with its 1546 renaissance tiled stove, the Fountain of Neptune, and Piwna Street, where Nazi war criminal Albert Forster once lived. Entry tickets to Stutthof and any museum you choose are included.
The tour runs in English, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, French and several other languages. Transport is by air-conditioned car for groups of 1–4 people or a van for groups of 5 or more. The walking at Stutthof covers 2.5 to 3.5 km with some uneven surfaces and steps. The guide adjusts the pace to your group. On request, you'll receive a documentary about Stutthof survivors by email after the tour.
