The experience
Christmas in Poland centers on dishes that appear only once a year, and this class teaches you the one that matters most: pierogi. You'll learn to knead the dough, roll it thin, and shape the dumplings the way Polish home cooks do. The class runs 2.5 hours, and the cooking is real. You're not watching a demonstration, you're making the food that lands on your plate an hour later.
The dinner unfolds in four courses. You begin with a selection of marinated herrings, then move to barszcz, a beetroot broth served with delicate mushroom-filled dumplings (which you'll have made during the class). The pierogi you shaped come next: traditionally filled with sauerkraut, a staple of the Polish Christmas Eve table. A rich poppy-seed dessert closes the meal. Between courses, your guide shares the customs that shape the holiday: why an extra plate always waits at the table, what the blessed wafers mean, and why these particular dishes return year after year. You also taste traditional Polish liqueurs.
You leave with a recipe booklet in English, a handout on Polish Christmas traditions and their religious roots, and a link to photos taken during the class. If you're vegetarian or vegan, you can skip the fish starter and the guide will adjust the menu.
