The Experience

I thought I knew what “underground” meant until we left Krakow behind and wound up at the entrance to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Our driver, Marek, chatted about Polish football on the way — I barely followed but his laugh was contagious. The van ride took maybe 40 minutes, just enough time for me to wonder if I’d regret all those pierogi before tackling 800 stairs. Turns out, you really do start by going down, down, down — 400 steps right off the bat. The air changed as soon as we hit the first landing; it felt cooler, almost damp, and there was this faint mineral tang that clung to my tongue.

Our group’s guide (Ania? Anna? I’m terrible with names) had this knack for making history sound like gossip — she pointed out old miners’ carvings in the walls and told us how some families worked here for generations. When we reached St Kinga’s Chapel, I actually stopped mid-step. It’s carved entirely from salt: walls, floor, even these wild chandeliers that glittered when she flicked her flashlight around. Someone whispered it looked like a cathedral underwater — which is weirdly true. I ran my hand along one of the railings (yes, salt), and it felt gritty but somehow smooth at the same time.

I didn’t expect to feel so small walking through those endless corridors — or to laugh so much at Ania’s jokes about superstitious miners (she swore some still leave coins for luck). There were moments when everyone went quiet; you could hear water dripping somewhere far off and your own footsteps echoing back. At one point a kid in our group tried licking the wall (his mom groaned), and honestly? I kind of wanted to try it too.

Afterwards there was a break — just enough time to grab a coffee and stare at postcards in the little shop while my legs remembered how to be above ground again. On the drive back to Krakow it started raining lightly; Marek said that meant good luck after visiting the mine.
