The experience

You start with early-morning hotel or meeting-point pickup in an air-conditioned minivan. The drive takes you to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where a professional English-speaking guide leads you through the largest Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust. You walk the original barracks where prisoners were held, pass through the main gate, and learn the history of a site that killed over a million people, mostly Jews, between 1941 and 1945. Skip-the-line entry means you move past the queue at the door. A headset lets you hear the guide clearly as the group moves through the museum.

After about a 10-minute break at the camp, you travel to Wieliczka for a roughly one-hour lunch break. Bring your own food or buy it nearby, as meals are not included. Then a local guide takes you into the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has operated continuously since the Middle Ages. You descend into excavated galleries, chambers, ramps, lakes and shafts, all carved from salt. The route is prepared for visitors but involves stairs and uneven ground. It is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Small backpacks only (no larger than 30x20x10 cm) are allowed inside.

The full day runs 12 hours from pickup to return. You'll need a valid ID or passport. The tour operates regardless of weather, so dress for the conditions. Depending on guide availability, the salt mine visit may happen first in the morning instead, with Auschwitz second.
