The experience
The route climbs through three mountain towns (Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac) each higher than the last, with a stop for coca tea to help with altitude. You'll pass natural carbonated springs and a small lake called Umapashimin before reaching the Pachacoto Gorge, where wild ducks live on Patococha lagoon. The Puya Raimondi plant, which grows up to 12 meters tall and produces thousands of flowers before it dies, marks the approach to the glacier itself.
The walk to Pastoruri takes about an hour one way. At the glacier, you see the ice walls and understand the scale of retreat from warming: the frozen lagoon sits where the glacier once extended further. You can touch the snow and stand at the altitude where the landscape opens into mountain views on all sides. After lunch in Catac on the way back, the group returns to Huaraz.
