The experience
The day starts before dawn. A private bus picks you up in Huaraz around 5 a.m. and heads north through valleys and small towns (Carhuaz, Mancos, Ranrahirca, Yungay) before stopping around 7:30 a.m. for breakfast. The route passes through the Llanganuco ravine, where you see two lagoons (Chinancocha and Orconcocha) before arriving at Yuraccorra, the trailhead.
From Yuraccorra, the hike takes roughly three hours to reach Laguna 69 at 4,604 meters. The lake sits in an open alpine basin, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of Chacraraju, Pisco, and Huascaran. You have free time at the lake to rest and eat lunch, then retrace the same path back down to Yuraccorra, where the bus returns you to Huaraz by evening. The whole outing runs about twelve hours door to door.
A live guide in your choice of English or Spanish leads the group throughout the day. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the altitude and the three-hour climb mean a steady pace and acclimatization help. Huascaran National Park charges a separate entrance fee at the gate. Bring cash or be prepared to pay on arrival.
