The Experience

So you've snowboarded before, or maybe you haven't, and you're wondering if sandboarding is actually a thing — it is, and the person teaching you won the world championship four times. That's not hyperbole. This tour runs out of Huacachina, a desert oasis on Peru's south coast, and it's built around the only professional sandboarder from Peru who competes internationally in snowboarding too. The first hour you walk about ten minutes to the training area, where you either take lessons if you're starting from scratch or do short runs to get used to how sand feels under your board. The instructor shows you how to wax your equipment so it slides right.

Then the pace shifts. You get into a dune buggy and spend the next two hours riding the highest sand dunes around Huacachina — and I mean riding them, not just looking at them. You'll do around four runs, sometimes five if time allows, and each one is steep enough that you feel the adrenaline. The instructor rides with you the whole time, takes pictures and videos on a GoPro throughout, and you get all those files at the end. (Bring a pendrive or SD card to transfer them; that's the only catch.) You catch the sunset before heading back to the oasis, which is when you sit down and go through everything you filmed.

The whole thing is three hours, and you leave with your own footage, waxed boards, and the muscle memory of riding actual desert. If you've ever wanted to know what sandboarding feels like without flying to a snow resort, this is where you do it.

Your three hours include sandboard or sandski equipment (board, boots, helmet, goggles, poles), professional waxing, a guide instructor who rides with you and films on GoPro, four to five runs on the highest dunes, a dune buggy ride around the desert, all fees and taxes, and digital copies of your GoPro pictures and videos before you return to Huacachina at sunset.
