The experience

The day splits between two things Ica is known for. You start at traditional and industrial vineyards where the producers walk you through how pisco and wine are made, then sit down to taste both. The tasting is followed by lunch at a restaurant in the city: your choice between a filled causa, a typical Peruvian potato and chicken dish, or sautéed loin flambéed with pisco. This part of the tour runs roughly three hours before you head toward the dunes.

The second half centers on Huacachina itself. A qualified driver takes you out in a modern buggy across the sand dunes, and you get time to sandboard down them. The route is timed so you're on the dunes as the sun sets, which is when the light is best for photos. After the buggy ride, you return to the oasis and climb to a high point to look back at the lagoon from above before heading to your hotel.

The whole experience runs 6.5 hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll be in a modern vehicle with a driver who stays with the group throughout, and a live guide who speaks either English or Spanish depending on which you choose at booking.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (5 to 11 years); Infant (3 to 4 years): free. Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.

What's the difference between traditional and industrial vineyards on this tour?

The tour visits both types so you see how pisco and wine production works at different scales. Traditional vineyards use older methods, while industrial ones use modern equipment, and the guide explains the process at each stop before you taste the final product.

Can I sandboard if I've never done it before?

Sandboarding is included in the dune portion and is open to beginners. The driver and guide are with you throughout, and the activity is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

What time of day does the sunset happen on the dunes?

The buggy ride and sandboarding are timed to coincide with sunset, so the exact time depends on the season. The operator schedules the vineyard and lunch portions earlier in the day so you reach the dunes as light fades.

Is lunch included, and can I choose what I eat?

Lunch is included at a restaurant in Ica. You can choose between a filled causa (a Peruvian potato and chicken dish) or sautéed loin with white rice, fries, and a pisco-based sauce.

Do I need to arrange my own way to the starting point?

Hotel pickup is included in the tour price. The driver collects you from your accommodation and returns you there at the end of the 6.5-hour experience.
