The experience
Iquitos sits at the heart of the Amazon, and this tour moves outward from there by river and on foot. After airport pickup, you travel by canoe down the Amazon River to the lodge, passing Bora riverside towns on the way. That first afternoon brings the butterfly farm, where you learn how metamorphosis works and what butterflies do for the forest. At night, a guide takes you out to spot tarantulas and listen to the sounds of nocturnal animals. The jungle is loudest when the sun goes down.
Day two starts before dawn so you can watch the sunrise and see which birds are active at first light. The Animal Rescue Center holds sloths, monkeys, anacondas, macaws and toucans. From there you move to the trapiche, a traditional sugarcane distillery where you extract juice and taste drinks made from jungle plants. The afternoon is for piranha fishing from a typical boat, and the evening is for watching the Amazon sunset before returning to the lodge for dinner.
On the final morning, a botanical walk takes you through giant trees and shows you medicinal plants and lianas. You then visit the Yaguas indigenous tribe, where you interact with community members and learn about their hunting weapons, including the blowgun. The tour ends with a return to Iquitos by mid-afternoon, timed so you can catch an evening flight if needed. All three nights' meals are included at the lodge, and the guide speaks both English and Spanish throughout.
