The experience
The tour begins at Iquitos airport or your hotel, then heads downriver to the lodge. You'll settle in and have lunch, then move straight into a botanical walk through giant trees where the guide points out medicinal plants like cat's claw. The animal rescue center comes next: a chance to see monkeys, anacondas, and macaws up close. Before sunset you'll visit the Amazon trapiche to watch sugar cane being pressed, then return to the lodge for dinner. After dark, the guide takes you back into the jungle to search for tarantulas and listen to the nocturnal sounds of insects and animals.
Day two starts before dawn so you can watch the sunrise from the jungle and spot exotic birds as they wake. A second botanical walk takes you through the canopy on Tarzan lianas: the vines that hang between the giant trees. After breakfast, a typical boat carries you upriver to look for the pink and gray river dolphins (called bufeo colorado locally) that live in this stretch of the Amazon. The final stop is the Yaguas indigenous community, where you dance with them, learn to use their hunting weapons like the blowgun, and hear about their life in the forest. You return to the lodge for lunch, then head back to Iquitos, arriving around 5pm.
All entries, meals at the lodge, the guide, and round-trip airport transfers are included. The lodge provides basic facilities for the overnight stay. Note that flights home should depart after 6pm to allow enough time to travel from the lodge to the airport.
