The experience
Flights must arrive in Iquitos before 8am to catch the same-day transfer to the lodge. From the airport, you're driven to the port and then travel by boat to Fundo Pedrito, a private animal reserve where you'll see caimans, anacondas, piranhas, macaws and the giant Victoria Regia water plant. A professional native guide leads an afternoon canoe ride through the surrounding trails, pointing out the plants local people use for food, medicine and materials. After dinner at the lodge, a nightfall excursion takes you by foot or canoe to spot tarantulas, spiders and nocturnal animals, listening for owls and the calls of nocturnal birds.
Day two starts at 4:30am with a dawn walk to watch birds in the landscape before they scatter. Breakfast follows at 8am back at the lodge. The morning visit to the Yaguas indigenous community includes traditional songs, dances and the chance to buy handmade crafts directly from the makers. Checkout is at 12:30pm, lunch at 1pm, then a one-hour boat ride back down the Amazon River to Iquitos airport, arriving around 4pm. Return flights must depart after 6pm.
The guide speaks English or Spanish and knows the trails and wildlife habits of the area. All meals specified in the itinerary (dinner on arrival, breakfast on departure day, and lunch before the return) are included. The lodge has a bar for evening drinks. The pace suits all fitness levels, though the dawn walk and canoe rides involve early starts and time on the water.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What animals will I actually see at Fundo Pedrito?
Fundo Pedrito is a reserve where you'll encounter caimans, anacondas, piranhas, macaws, parrots, turtles and the giant Victoria Regia aquatic plant. The reserve is maintained by the owners for conservation, so the animals are present but sightings depend on the time of day and season.
Do I need to arrange my own accommodation in Iquitos before or after the tour?
The 2-day tour includes one night at the jungle lodge but does not cover lodging in Iquitos itself. If your flight arrives before 8am or departs before 6pm, you'll need to book a hotel in the city separately.
What is the canoe ride like, and how much paddling do I do?
The canoe rides are led by a professional native guide who knows all the trails. You ride as a passenger while the guide navigates and points out flora, fauna and the uses local people make of plants. There is no paddling required on your part.
Why does the tour start so early on the second day?
The 4:30am dawn walk is timed to observe birds at their most active and vocal, before the heat of the day drives them into deeper cover. The early start also allows time for breakfast, the community visit and a one-hour boat ride back to Iquitos airport before your afternoon departure flight.
Is the indigenous community visit a performance or a real exchange?
The visit to the Yaguas community includes traditional songs and dances, and you have the opportunity to buy handicrafts made by community members. The guide will explain the cultural context, though the depth of interaction depends on the group size and the community's availability that day.
