You hike 8 kilometers uphill through Inca Trail sections, visit the archaeological complex of Wiñaywayna, reach the Sun Gate for your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu on day one, then spend day two exploring the citadel itself with a guide and free time to roam. Hotel pickup, train tickets, meals, entrance fees and one night's accommodation in Aguas Calientes are all included; you need moderate fitness and at least one other person to book.
So you're thinking about doing the Inca Trail but don't have a week? Yeah, that's exactly why this one exists. You start early — hotel pickup in Cusco, then a train ride to km 104 on the railroad where the actual walking begins. By 9am you're at Chachabamba, a smaller archaeological complex most people skip, and then you're into the real thing: an 8-kilometer uphill stretch that takes about four hours. It's not a casual stroll. You're climbing from 2,150 meters to 2,680 meters, and the trail gets steeper as you go, but it's also the part where you actually feel like you're on the Inca Trail — stone steps, mountain air, the sense that you're following something old.
Wiñaywayna hits different when you get there. It's this sprawling complex with agricultural terraces stacked into the mountainside, religious structures, residential areas — the whole thing built into the slope like someone figured out how to make a city vertical. You eat lunch there, and then the trail keeps going up to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, at 2,730 meters. That's where the first real view of Machu Picchu opens up in front of you. It's the view everyone wants, and you get it on day one instead of day four. After that you descend into the site itself, walk around a bit, and then take a bus down to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base, where you sleep in a 3-star hotel with a private bathroom and breakfast included.
Day two is the full guided tour of Machu Picchu itself — about two hours with someone who actually knows what you're looking at — and then the site is yours to wander. If you've got the legs for it, you can pay extra to climb Huaynapicchu Mountain for the aerial view, but there's only 400 permits a day so it fills up fast. After you're done exploring, you head back down to Aguas Calientes for lunch on your own, catch the 4:12pm train back to Cusco (or Ollantaytambo if that's your station), and you're home by evening. The whole thing is two nights away from Cusco, not four.
Your trek includes hotel pickup from Cusco, train and bus tickets, entrance fees to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu archaeological site, lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two, one night at a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes with a private bathroom, and a guide who speaks English or Spanish. You arrange and pay for lunch on day two in Aguas Calientes separately.
