The experience
The whale watching season runs July 15 through October 30, when humpback whales migrate to Panama to birth and nurse their young. You travel from Boquete by air-conditioned vehicle to the dock, then boat out to Isla Bolanos. The crossing itself is when you're most likely to spot whales. The operator does not chase them, so sightings depend on where the whales are that day. Once you reach the island, you have three hours to swim, snorkel the coral reefs, or rest in a hammock on the white sand.
Lunch is a spread you build yourself (sandwiches, fruit, vegetables, chips, salsa, cookies) plus tea, juice, fresh water and sodas throughout the day. You get snorkel mask and gear, beach towels, and a certified boat captain and local guide who speak English or Spanish. The return crossing gives another window for whale sightings. The whole day runs about 10 hours from pickup to drop-off in Boquete.
A minimum of four people per booking is required to run the tour. If the group doesn't meet that threshold after confirmation, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The operator asks for at least moderate fitness, and vegetarian meals are available if you request them when you book.
