The experience
The day starts with pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle from Boquete or David and heads straight into the Caldera landscape toward Surf Waterfall. This is where the hike opens up: instead of a standard trail around the falls, you get to slide down the natural rock face into the pool below, or wade and swim if you prefer. The slides and jumps are optional. The guide will show you the path forward either way, so you move at your own pace through the water.
After time at Surf Waterfall, the route continues to Water Alive waterfall, where you stop for fresh fruit and water before moving on. The hiking itself is moderate and follows the water, so the terrain is set by the stream rather than a groomed path. From there you head into Caldera City for lunch: a traditional Panamanian meal served while the guide talks through the area's history and the geography of the Doraces Indians who lived here. The return journey takes you back to your starting point in Boquete.
Everything is arranged: the van handles the transport between sites, the guide knows where the water is safe to enter and where the slides work, and the meals and water are packed. You carry nothing but yourself and whatever you want to bring back.
