The experience
The day starts with a 7 AM pickup from your Panama City hotel and a 2.5-hour drive through jungle and rolling hills to the Caribbean coast. Once at the port, you board a shared boat to Isla Linton, where howler monkeys call from the dense canopy overhead and a crystal-clear natural pool sits ringed by mangroves: shallow enough to stand in, surrounded by birdsong and the occasional monkey cry. On the way to the next island, the boat passes through the Tunnel of Love, a narrow mangrove passage where trees form a natural roof. You stop here for a swim on a shallow sandbank before continuing.
Isla Mamey is where the snorkeling happens. A shallow coral reef sits just offshore in turquoise water, and palm trees line the white-sand beach for shade between dives. After an hour or two in the water, a short boat ride takes you to Isla Grande, an Afro-Caribbean island with no roads, just a coastal path of pastel houses and fishing boats. Lunch is at a seafront restaurant (fresh seafood or local dishes like fried plantains, paid separately), and you can spend the afternoon snorkeling again or swimming off the private beach with a cold Balboa beer.
At 3 PM, the boat returns to the port and you drive to Portobelo, the historic town Christopher Columbus named Puerto Bello in 1502. A local guide walks you through the fortress ruins of San Felipe de Portobelo, explaining how the town became a key Spanish port for exporting silver and treasures to Europe, and how pirates and naval invasions (including Sir Henry Morgan and Admiral Edward Vernon) shaped its fate. Though it was rebuilt in 1751, Portobelo never regained its former power. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site blending Caribbean charm with colonial history. You return to Panama City by evening, full of the day's snorkeling, swimming and stories.
