The Experience

The boat leaves Alajuela Lake in the morning, heading upriver into the Chagres National Park rainforest. You're in a piragua—a traditional indigenous canoe—moving slowly through the water while the jungle closes in on both sides. The air gets thicker, the sound of the city fades, and within an hour you're at the mouth of a narrow canyon where the river cuts between steep banks and the canopy overhead blocks out most of the sky.

Before reaching Tusipono Embera village, the guide stops at El Charco, a walking trail that cuts through the jungle floor. It's a short walk—maybe twenty minutes—but the density of it hits you: vines thick as rope, trees you can't wrap your arms around, and the constant sound of water and birds. There's a small waterfall at the end, the kind of place where the light breaks through in shafts and everything smells like wet earth and growing things. You get time to photograph it, and then it's back to the boat.

Tusipono sits on the riverbank, a cluster of open-sided structures and a few houses built on stilts. The Embera community meets you there and shows you how they live—the way they dress, how they make their handicrafts by hand, the patterns they paint on their skin. They perform traditional dances and music, and it's not a performance for tourists so much as it is their actual culture, happening in front of you. You can talk to them, ask questions, watch them work. Lunch is fish, fried plantain, and fruit, cooked by the community and eaten together, and the whole thing—the boat ride, the jungle walk, the village, the meal—takes most of the day.

Hotel pickup is included, and so is entry to both the village and Chagres National Park. Bottled water comes with you. The vehicle is air-conditioned on the drive out and back, which matters because the heat and humidity are real. Plan on leaving early and returning in the late afternoon.
