The Experience

The boat leaves Alajuela Lake in the morning, heading upriver into the Chagres National Park rainforest. You're in a piragua—a traditional indigenous canoe—moving slowly through the water while the jungle closes in on both sides. The air gets thicker, the sound of the city fades, and within an hour you're at the mouth of a narrow canyon where the river cuts between steep banks and the canopy overhead blocks out most of the sky.

Before reaching Tusipono Embera village, the guide stops at El Charco, a walking trail that cuts through the jungle floor.
