Summary

From Playa Blanca to Antón Valley waterfalls or Pozo Azul river pools in one day

You’ll ride from Playa Blanca up into Panama’s Antón Valley or out to Pozo Azul River, walking forest trails or swimming in emerald pools. Expect fresh mountain air, a loud waterfall, time for local lunch and crafts at the market, plus private pickup and drop-off so you don’t have to worry about logistics. Just bring some curiosity—and maybe dry socks.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect the drive out from RIU Playa Blanca to feel so different so quickly — one minute it’s all beach hotels and sunbaked roads, the next we’re winding up into the Antón Valley, windows down, air suddenly cooler. Our guide — I think his name was Miguel? — pointed out where the old volcano rim curves around the whole village. He told us people come here for the waterfall and those mineral pools, but honestly I just liked watching locals at the market set up their stalls with baskets of fruit and sweets. The smell of guava hung in the air, sweet but a little sharp.

We did the walk to Chorro el Macho Waterfall first. It’s only about fifteen minutes along a trail that gets muddy in spots (my shoes are still recovering), across these hanging bridges that creak just enough to make you laugh nervously. The water crashes down so loud you have to shout if you want anyone to hear you. Some kids were splashing around in one of the pools below — their laughter echoed everywhere. I touched the rock near the falls; it felt cold and slick, almost like glass.

Lunch was at this tiny place by the public market — nothing fancy, just grilled fish and rice with plantains. Miguel recommended some local candy I can’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say it in Spanish — definitely butchered it). After that we had time to wander through stalls selling woven hats and carved wooden animals; I bought a little turtle for my niece. If you pick the Pozo Azul River option instead, it’s more about swimming in that clear green water for as long as you want (within reason), which sounded tempting too. Either way, they’ll drive you back to your hotel after — I dozed off on the way home with my window cracked open, still smelling faintly of river stones and sunscreen.
