The experience

Can you see Peshawar's main sights without a car or a local contact? Yes, this tour picks you up in Islamabad at 6 a.m. and drives the M-1 Motorway for two and a half hours to reach the city. The route covers 180 kilometers and includes an optional tea or snack stop along the way, so you arrive in Peshawar mid-morning with time to explore.

The tour centers on four stops that anchor Peshawar's identity. Mahabat Khan Mosque stands as the architectural centerpiece: a Mughal structure from the 1660s with three fluted domes, white marble façade and Quranic calligraphy carved into the stone. Qissa Khwani Bazaar, the "Storyteller's Market," occupies the same streets where merchants from Central Asia and South Asia once gathered to trade goods and tales over cups of qehwa (green tea). Today it remains a working market where you can walk and browse. Sethi House, built between 1835 and 1884, showcases 19th-century Mughal-Central Asian design (intricate woodwork, colored glass inlays, and a central courtyard), and now functions as a museum holding regional paintings, sculptures, carpets and textiles. At 1 p.m., lunch happens at Namak Mandi, a food street known for charsi tikka and lamb karahi. The name itself comes from the Mughal era when it was a salt market.

A 30-minute shopping stop lets you pick up Peshawari chappals (traditional leather sandals), dried fruits or local handicrafts before the return journey. The drive back to Islamabad leaves at 1:30 p.m. and arrives around 4 p.m., using the same motorway route. Entrance fees to each site, lunch, the air-conditioned vehicle and fuel are all included. Breakfast and dinner are not.
